Where would I travel to? Travel is based upon the location of the natural disaster. Previous operations have included the 12 Western States & and the Southern United States.
How long would I be gone? We ask that you are available for a minimum of two weeks. Some incidents only last 5 days, others can last up to a month or more. Unfortunately we cannot determine ahead of time how long the assignment might last, but in general, Hurricane incidents tend to be a month or more and Fire incidents tend to be a week or so.
What should I bring? Upon being hired, you will receive a manual that details what to pack. For the most part, you are expected to bring your own pillow, sleeping bag, personal toiletries, and clothes enough for two weeks.
Is there a dress code? Yes there is. Again, upon being hired you will receive a manual, and it details what we consider appropriate business attire for the environment. The company uniform is nice khakis or jeans, and the company shirt.
What are the Attendant crews like? Our crews are very diverse, not only in ages, but also home locations and job experiences. This makes for a very dynamic crew and fun work team.
Would I be able to site see in my off time? Most of the areas we are stationed are not located near typical tourist locations. In most cases we are in the middle of nowhere or unable to get anywhere else (i.e. hurricane disaster, a lot of road damage and debris). However, if the environment and scheduling permits, we will make time for the crew to check out the local area. Is it my responsibility to arrange my own travel to and from an incident? No. We arrange all your travel from the airport to the location. Your only responsibility is to get to the airport.
Do I have to pay for my own travel expenses? Travel expenses, such as meals, and lodging if required, will be arranged and paid for by The Mobile Sleeper Company. However, it is a good idea to bring cash with you in order to buy extra necessities and your own specialty snacks.
What if there is a family emergency, could I go home? Of course. We treat it like the end of any incident and cover your travel arrangements and associated expenses for the return. Keep in my that some of the incidents we may be located at are very remote and may require more than 24 hours to get you home.
Will I be able to travel to an incident with my friends that also were hired for the attendant position? Maybe. Everyone has different schedules and needs that we must accommodate, so we therefore cannot promise that we will send you and friends out together.
Can I take my personal vehicle/rig? At this time your ability to take a personal vehicle/rig to an incident will be determined on a case by case basis. When you are called for an incident the answer will have already been determined and we will let you know at that time if it is appropriate for you to bring a personal vehicle/rig.
Will there be training either before or at the location of the incident? If possible, there will be training sessions arranged prior to the start of the season. If you are unable to attend any of these sessions, you will be subject to on the job training. Within the first 24 hours of your arrival in the field, the Team Leader will show you a series of videos that go over all the different aspects of the job.
How difficult is the work? The attendant position is not one that is extremely physically demanding and complicated. However, this job requires you to be motivated, attentive, and consistent. The challenging aspect of this position is to maintain The Mobile Sleeper Company standards in regards to cleanliness and field operation for extended periods of time.
Is housing provided? Yes, housing is provided. The best description is that of a dorm-like situation. The crew quarters vary according to camp size, and will either separate male and female attendants or it will be co-ed housing.
Is it safe at these camps that we would work at? Our staff always has your safety as their first priority. We will not send you or the equipment to a location that is unsafe or questionable. Can my spouse also work for The Mobile Sleeper Company? We are a fair and equal opportunity employer, and therefore ask that all married couples apply individually for the attendant position. Even if one spouse is already employed with the company, we ask that the applicant follow the appropriate steps for being hired. If we are both employed by the Mobile Sleeper Company, can we be together at the same camp? Maybe. Each incident that we respond to is different and therefore requires individuals to be flexible. If possible, we try to place working teams together, however, if the situation requires multiple locations and increased or decreased numbers it may be necessary to separate the team.
Do I have to be available at all times? Not necessarily. It is up to you to tell us when you are and are not available to work, so if you would like to take a vacation or a weekend get-away, just let us know when you would be available to work.
What are the chances that I will be called out? Unfortunately we cannot predict what the natural disaster season will be like and therefore cannot predict how many times you will go out this year. This is a part-time, call when needed position. If you are in need of a steady job and income, this is not the job for you.
